Does doxyPEP prevent syphilis?
Yes, and very well. Syphilis is caused by a bacterium that is still fully sensitive to doxycycline. In the DoxyPEP study, syphilis dropped by more than three quarters in the group that used doxyPEP.
That matters, because syphilis has been rising in many European countries for years, especially among gay and bisexual men. It is easy to treat when found early, but it can cause serious damage when it goes unnoticed.
The stages of syphilis
Syphilis develops in stages. The first signs are easy to miss, which is why it spreads so quietly.
A painless sore
Where the bacteria entered: genitals, anus or mouth. It heals by itself, so many people miss it.
Rash and flu feeling
Often a rash on the palms or soles, sometimes swollen glands or fever.
Hidden stage
No symptoms at all, but the infection is still there.
Serious damage
Without treatment it can harm the heart, brain and nerves.
The good news: at every stage, syphilis can be treated with penicillin. The earlier, the simpler.
Testing for syphilis
Syphilis is found with a blood test. It can take up to three months after sex before the test turns positive, so a test right after a risk is not always conclusive.
If you use doxyPEP, test every three months anyway. DoxyPEP lowers your risk a lot, but not to zero. And if you notice a sore or a rash, get tested straight away, do not wait for your next check-up.
When to take doxyPEP for syphilis
The same as for any other STI: ideally within 24 hours, and no later than 72 hours after sex. Two tablets of 100 mg together. Check the exact timing with the doxyPEP calculator.
