What is doxyPEP

A morning-after tablet for bacterial STIs

DoxyPEP stands for doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis. You take one dose of 200 mg doxycycline after sex without a condom. The antibiotic stops bacteria before an infection can take hold.

It is not a daily pill and it is not something you take before sex. You only take it when you need it: ideally within 24 hours, and no later than 72 hours after sex. Never more than 200 mg in one day.

DoxyPEP works best as part of a bigger plan. Keep testing for STIs every three months, and use PrEP or condoms for HIV. DoxyPEP and PrEP are not the same thing.

Questions about doxy PEP

What is doxyPEP?
DoxyPEP means taking a single 200 mg dose of the antibiotic doxycycline after condomless sex, to lower the chance that a bacterial STI such as syphilis or chlamydia takes hold.
When do I take doxy PEP?
Ideally within 24 hours after sex, and no later than 72 hours. Take no more than 200 mg in any 24 hours.
Do I need a prescription?
Doxycycline is a prescription medicine, but you do not need a separate appointment. You answer a short health questionnaire when you order, and a registered doctor reviews it before the pharmacy ships your pack.
Does doxyPEP protect against HIV?
No. DoxyPEP works against some bacterial STIs only. For HIV you need PrEP, HIV PEP or condoms.
Is doxyPEP suitable for women?
Usually not. DoxyPEP works in gay and bisexual men and trans women. In women it has not been shown to work: the one large study among cisgender women found no effect. That is why we do not recommend doxyPEP for women.
