Who is doxyPEP for?

DoxyPEP fits best if you are a man who has sex with men or a trans woman, you have sex without condoms, and you had an STI before or have changing partners. Read more in what is doxyPEP.

How to take it

Two tablets of 100 mg together, with a full glass of water, ideally within 24 hours and at the latest 72 hours after sex. Never more than 200 mg in 24 hours. All steps in how to take doxyPEP.

Keep testing

DoxyPEP lowers the risk, it does not remove it. Test for STIs every three months, at a public STI clinic or with a free home test kit where available in your area.

Frequently asked questions

Is doxyPEP available in Ireland?
Yes, but not everywhere yet. The HSE published interim guidance in 2024, and some public STI clinics offer doxyPEP. Because services have no extra funding for it, not every clinic can. You can also order it online after a doctor's check.
Is there an Irish guideline for doxyPEP?
There is interim HSE guidance from 2024. A full national guideline has not been published yet. Until then, clinics follow the interim guidance and European advice.
Who is doxyPEP for in Ireland?
The interim guidance supports doxyPEP for gay and bisexual men and trans women who have oral or anal sex without condoms. For other groups there is not enough evidence yet.
Do I need a prescription for doxyPEP in Ireland?
Yes. Doxycycline is prescription-only. You get it from a sexual health service, or online after a licensed doctor has checked your answers.
