The only proven option: doxyPEP
Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis, doxyPEP, is the only antibiotic approach after sex that large studies have shown to work.
One dose of 200 mg, taken within 72 hours after sex without a condom, lowers the risk of syphilis and chlamydia by more than three quarters and gonorrhoea by about half. Read more in what is doxyPEP.
What does not work
| Option | Works to prevent STIs? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| DoxyPEP (doxycycline 200 mg) | Yes | Proven in large studies |
| Leftover antibiotics at home | No | Wrong type or dose, raises resistance |
| Amoxicillin after sex | No | Not shown to prevent STIs |
| Antibiotics against HIV | No | HIV is a virus, antibiotics do not work |
| Daily doxycycline before sex | Not advised | Only studied on a small scale |
Why "just any antibiotic" is a bad idea
Taking the wrong antibiotic, or the wrong dose, does not protect you but does give bacteria a chance to become resistant. That makes future infections harder to treat, for you and for others. DoxyPEP is a specific dose of a specific medicine, used only after a real risk.
Antibiotics do not replace testing
Whatever you take, test for STIs every three months if you have sex without condoms, and always when you have symptoms. Testing finds what prevention misses.
